Des milliers de gens traversent la vie comme s’ils n’avaient pas de but élevé ni d’idéal à atteindre. Une des raisons en est le peu d’estime qu’ils ont d’eux-mêmes. Mais le Christ a payé pour nous un prix infini et il désire que nous nous évaluions à la mesure de cette rançon. – Le ministère évangélique, p. 286.
Les hommes comprennent difficilement le but de la vie. Attirés par ce qui brille, ils ambitionnent les premières places et sacrifient l’essentiel. Les biens les meilleurs ici-bas – la simplicité, l’honnêteté, la véracité, l’intégrité, la pureté – ne peuvent s’acheter ni se vendre. Ils sont gratuits pour l’ignorant comme pour le savant, le simple ouvrier ou l’homme d’Etat comblé d’honneurs. Dieu a en réserve des plaisirs auxquels riches et pauvres peuvent accéder : la joie que procurent la pureté de la pensée et l’action désintéressée, la satisfaction que l’on éprouve à témoigner de la sympathie et à faire du bien autour de soi. Une lumière divine se dégage des chrétiens qui suivent cette voie, et illumine le sentier de ceux qui, autour d’eux, marchent dans les ténèbres. – Le ministère de la guérison, p. 168.
La passion excessive du gain, l’amour de la parure, le luxe et la prodigalité, voilà ce qui détourne le plus grand nombre du véritable but de la vie. La porte est ainsi ouverte à une foule de maux. Beaucoup d’hommes, absorbés par la recherche de trésors terrestres, deviennent insensibles aux ordres de Dieu et aux besoins de leurs semblables. Ils considèrent leurs richesses comme un moyen de se glorifier, ajoutent maison à maison, terrain à terrain, ornent leurs demeures de meubles luxueux, alors que tout autour d’eux des êtres humains croupissent dans la misère, le crime, la maladie et la mort. – Témoignages pour l’Eglise, vol. 3, p. 391.
Chez beaucoup de gens, le but capital de la vie – l’objet qui justifiera n’importe quelle somme de travail – est de se trouver toujours en accord avec la dernière mode. Instruction, santé, confort, tout est sacrifié sur l’autel de la mode. – Conseils sur la nutrition et les aliments, p. 304.
La gloutonnerie et l’intempérance sont à la base de la grande dépravation morale de notre monde. Satan le sait et il ne cesse de tenter hommes et femmes afin qu’ils cèdent à leurs goûts au mépris de la santé et même de la vie. Manger, boire, se vêtir sont devenus le but de la vie pour le monde. Un état de choses exactement semblable existait avant le déluge. Et cet état de dissipation est l’une des preuves caractéristiques de la fin prochaine de l’histoire de ce monde. – Evènements des derniers jours, p. 24.
Bien des parents pensent travailler au bonheur de leurs enfants en encourageant leur passion pour les amusements. Ils admettent qu’ils soient captivés par le sport et leur permettent d’assister à des parties de plaisir ; ils leur donnent de l’argent, qu’ils peuvent dépenser sans scrupules en vue de leur satisfaction personnelle. Or, plus on se livre au plaisir, plus il devient une obsession. Ces jeunes gens sont à tel point absorbés par les amusements qu’ils finissent par les considérer comme le but principal de la vie. Ils contractent des habitudes de paresse et de laisser-aller qui les rendent incapables de devenir de bons chrétiens. – Les paraboles de Jésus, p. 39.
Chez les jeunes du monde, la recherche d’une compagnie nombreuse et des plaisirs devient une passion dévorante. Suivre la mode, sortir, satisfaire ses habitudes et ses penchants, et tourbillonner dans le cercle des distractions sociales semble être le but principal de leur existence. Ils se sentent malheureux dans la solitude. Leur plus grand désir est d’être admirés, flattés et de faire sensation dans leur entourage ; et s’ils n’y parviennent pas, la vie leur paraît insupportable.
Souvent, ceux qui aiment la compagnie la recherchent à tel point que cela devient une véritable passion. … La lecture de la Bible et la méditation spirituelle leur deviennent insupportables. Ils sont malheureux quand ils n’ont aucun sujet d’excitation. Ils ne possèdent pas en eux-mêmes d’aptitude au bonheur ; celui-ci, pour eux, dépend de la compagnie d’autres jeunes tout aussi écervelés et insouciants qu’eux-mêmes. Au lieu d’orienter leurs facultés vers des objectifs élevés, ils ne pensent qu’à faire des sottises et à se distraire. – Le foyer chrétien, p. 443.
Les jeunes gens devraient sérieusement réfléchir au but de la vie et veiller à ce que leurs habitudes soient exemptes de corruption. Il faut qu’ils aient de la confiance en eux-mêmes s’ils veulent être capables d’exercer une influence autour d’eux. Le nénuphar lacustre plonge ses racines au-dessous des ordures et du limon ; sa tige poreuse tire tout ce qui est nécessaire à son développement et expose à la lumière sa corolle immaculée. Il rejette tout ce qui pourrait ternir et souiller sa beauté.
Ceci nous enseigne une leçon : quoique entourés d’influences délétères et ruineuses, nous pouvons nous soustraire à la corruption. Chaque jeune homme devrait rechercher la compagnie de ceux qui, d’un pas ferme, s’avancent sur le chemin qui monte. Il devrait éviter la société de ceux qui subissent toutes les mauvaises influences, qui sont oisifs, qui n’éprouvent pas un désir sincère d’atteindre un idéal élevé, et sur qui on ne peut pas compter. On devrait trouver nos jeunes gens en compagnie de ceux qui ont la crainte et l’amour de Dieu ; ces caractères nobles et fermes ressemblent au nénuphar qui déploie sa corolle à la surface du lac. Refusant de subir les influences démoralisantes, ils n’attirent à eux que ce qui peut les aider à former un caractère pur et noble. Chers jeunes gens, quel est le but de votre vie ? Voulez-vous vous instruire pour acquérir un nom et une position dans le monde ? Caressez-vous l’ambition secrète d’atteindre un jour les sommets de la vie intellectuelle, de faire partie des assemblées législatives et de contribuer à donner des lois au pays ? Il n’y a rien à blâmer dans de telles aspirations. Chacun de vous peut atteindre son but. Il ne faut pas se contenter de succès mesquins. Visez haut, n’épargnez aucune peine pour atteindre la cible. – Messages à la jeunesse, p. 33.
Pour atteindre sûrement le grand but de la vie, sans erreur quant au choix et sans crainte d’échec, placez Dieu au commencement et à la fin de chaque plan, de chaque acte, de chaque pensée, et donnez-lui la meilleure part. Pour suivre le chemin qui conduit sans faute aux ténèbres, il suffit de rejeter derrière vous la lumière divine et de vivre sans Dieu. Quand Dieu vous indique la voie à suivre et vous dit : “Voici pour vous le chemin du salut et de la paix”, il vous suffit de vous orienter dans la direction opposée à la voie du Seigneur : vos pieds vous porteront vers la perdition. La voix de l’Agneau de Dieu se fait entendre ; elle nous dit : “Suivez-moi et vous ne marcherez pas dans les ténèbres.” – Messages choisis, vol. 2, p. 189.
Celui qui a créé l’homme a pourvu au développement de son corps, de son âme et de son esprit. Le succès de l’éducation dépend donc de la fidélité avec laquelle on se conforme au plan du Créateur. Au commencement, Dieu créa l’homme à son image et l’enrichit de facultés nobles et bien équilibrées. Par la chute et ses conséquences, ces dons ont été pervertis. Le péché a souillé et presque oblitéré l’image de Dieu en l’homme. C’est pour restaurer cette image que le plan du salut a été formé et qu’un temps d’épreuve nous a été accordé. Revenir à notre perfection originelle, tel est l’objet principal de la vie présente et le vrai but de l’éducation. L’œuvre des parents et des pédagogues consiste donc à devenir “collaborateurs de Dieu” dans la réalisation de son plan. – Patriarches et Prophètes, p. 584.
Ce qui par-dessus tout devrait nous faire apprécier la Bible c’est le fait qu’elle révèle aux hommes la volonté de Dieu. Elle nous apprend la raison pour laquelle nous avons été créés et les moyens par lesquels cet objectif peut être atteint. Elle nous fait connaître la manière d’améliorer comme il convient la vie présente et comment hériter de la vie à venir. Nul autre livre ne saurait mieux répondre aux interrogations de l’esprit et aux désirs du cœur. En acquérant une connaissance de la Parole divine et en y obéissant, les hommes peuvent s’élever des abîmes de l’avilissement et devenir des fils de Dieu, des collaborateurs des anges sans péché. – Pour un bon équilibre mental et spirituel, vol. 1, p. 93.
La grandeur et la décadence des nations, telles que nous les ont décrites les livres de Daniel et de l’Apocalypse, devraient nous apprendre combien vaine est la gloire de ce monde. Babylone, dans toute sa magnificence et dont la puissance n’a jamais été égalée, semblait devoir durer éternellement. Mais où est-elle aujourd’hui ? Elle a passé “comme la fleur de l’herbe” Jacques 1 : 10. Les empires qui lui ont succédé : médo-persan, grec et romain passèrent de la même manière. Et ainsi périra tout ce qui n’a pas Dieu pour fondement. Seul demeure ce qui est selon ses desseins et qui exprime son caractère. Ses principes constituent les seules bases durables ici-bas.
Une étude attentive de l’accomplissement du plan divin dans l’histoire des nations et des prophéties relatives aux événements futurs nous aidera à estimer à leur juste valeur les choses visibles et invisibles, et à apprendre quel est le but véritable de la vie. Ainsi, en considérant les événements à la lumière de l’éternité, il est possible de vivre comme Daniel et ses compagnons pour ce qui est vrai, noble et durable. En apprenant ici-bas à nous conformer aux principes du royaume de notre Seigneur et Sauveur – royaume qui durera éternellement – nous serons prêts quand il apparaîtra une seconde fois à entrer avec lui dans sa gloire. – Prophètes et Rois, p. 417.
Nous devrions vivre en vue du monde futur. Vivre une vie à l’aventure, sans but, est un véritable malheur. Nous avons besoin d’un objectif dans la vie… Que Dieu nous aide tous à faire preuve d’abnégation, à être moins soucieux de nos aises personnelles, de nos intérêts égoïstes, et à faire du bien, non pour l’honneur que nous espérons en retirer ici-bas, mais parce que tel est le but de notre vie et que cela réalisera l’objectif de notre existence. Que notre prière s’élève vers Dieu afin qu’il nous libère de notre égoïsme. – Pour un bon équilibre mental et spirituel, vol. 2, p. 827.
Le but de notre vie est de nous préparer pour la vie éternelle. Si nous accomplissons cette tâche comme Dieu l’a conçue, chaque tentation sera une occasion de progrès ; car si nous résistons à la séduction, nous avancerons vers la vie divine. Au plus chaud du conflit, des agents invisibles seront à nos côtés, envoyés par le ciel pour nous aider dans nos combats ; durant la crise, la force, la fermeté et l’énergie nous seront imparties, et nous aurons à notre disposition plus qu’une puissance mortelle. …
Le Saint-Esprit travaille constamment, cherchant à purifier, à affiner et à discipliner l’âme des hommes, afin qu’ils soient prêts à faire partie de la société des saints et des anges. – Puissance de la grâce, p. 210.
