La prière et la foi ont des liens étroits et doivent être étudiées ensemble. Il y a, dans la prière de la foi, une science divine, à laquelle doit accéder celui qui veut réussir sa vie. Le Christ a dit : “Tout ce que vous demandez en priant, croyez que vous l’avez reçu, et cela vous sera accordé.” (Marc 11 : 24). Bien sûr, nos demandes doivent être en harmonie avec la volonté de Dieu ; nous devons rechercher ce qu’il nous a promis, et utiliser ce que nous recevons selon son vouloir. Dans ces conditions, sa promesse est sans équivoque.
Nous pouvons demander le pardon de nos péchés, le Saint-Esprit, un caractère à l’image du Christ, la sagesse et la force pour accomplir l’œuvre de Dieu, ou n’importe lequel des dons promis ; et puis croyons que nous le recevons, et remercions-en Dieu.
Nous n’avons à attendre aucune manifestation extérieure de la bénédiction divine. Le don est dans la promesse, et nous pouvons vaquer à nos occupations, certains que ce que Dieu a promis, il peut l’accorder, et que ce don, que nous possédons déjà, se manifestera lorsque nous en aurons le plus besoin.
Vivre ainsi, de la Parole de Dieu, signifie que l’on s’est totalement abandonné au Seigneur, que l’on a sans cesse besoin de lui, que l’on en est sans cesse dépendant, que le cœur s’élance vers lui. La prière est alors indispensable : c’est la vie de l’âme. Prière en famille, prière publique ont leur importance ; mais c’est la relation secrète avec Dieu qui fait vivre l’âme. – Education, pp. 290, 291.
L’exaucement de nos prières dépend de certaines conditions. Une des premières, c’est que nous sentions le besoin du secours de Dieu. Sa promesse est : “Je répandrai des eaux sur le sol altéré, et des ruisseaux sur la terre desséchée.” (Esaïe 44 : 3.) Ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice et qui soupirent après Dieu, peuvent avoir l’assurance d’être rassasiés. Il faut que le cœur soit ouvert à l’influence de l’Esprit, si l’on veut recevoir la bénédiction de Dieu.
Notre grand besoin est lui-même l’argument qui plaide le plus éloquemment en notre faveur. Mais encore faut-il adresser nos requêtes à Dieu. “Demandez et vous recevrez”, dit-il. “Lui, qui n’a pas épargné son propre Fils, mais qui l’a livré pour nous tous, comment ne nous donnera-t-il pas aussi toutes choses avec lui ?” (Matthieu 7 : 7; Jean 16 : 24; Romains 8 : 32.)
Si nous conservons de l’iniquité dans nos cœurs, si nous retenons quelque péché connu, le Seigneur ne nous exaucera pas, tandis que la prière du pécheur repentant, au cœur brisé, sera toujours acceptée. Dès que nous aurons délaissé tous nos péchés et réparé nos torts dans la mesure du possible, nous pourrons nous attendre à l’exaucement de nos prières. Nos propres mérites ne pourront jamais nous attirer les faveurs de Dieu ; ce sont les mérites de Jésus qui nous sauveront, c’est son sang qui nous purifiera. Toutefois, nous avons quelque chose à faire : nous conformer aux conditions de sa grâce.
La foi est un autre élément de la prière exaucée. “Il faut que celui qui s’approche de Dieu croie que Dieu existe et qu’il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.” Jésus dit à ses disciples : “Tout ce que vous demanderez en priant, croyez que vous l’avez reçu, et vous le verrez s’accomplir.” (Hébreux 11 : 6 ; Marc 11 : 24.) Le prenez-vous au mot ? L’assurance est large et sans restriction, et celui qui a fait la promesse est fidèle.
Lorsque nous ne recevons pas immédiatement les choses demandées, croyons néanmoins que le Seigneur nous a entendus et qu’il nous exaucera. Nous sommes tellement sujets à l’erreur, notre vue est tellement bornée, qu’il nous arrive parfois de demander des choses qui ne nous seraient pas bonnes. Dans son amour, notre Père céleste exauce nos prières en nous accordant ce qui est pour notre bien, ce que nous demanderions nous-mêmes si nous pouvions juger justement des choses spirituelles. Si nos prières ne paraissent pas être entendues, cramponnons-nous à la promesse, car le temps de l’exaucement viendra certainement, et nous recevrons alors la bénédiction dont nous avons le plus pressant besoin. Mais prétendre que les prières seront toujours exaucées de la manière dont nous l’entendons, c’est de la présomption. Dieu est trop sage pour se tromper, et trop bon pour nous refuser ce qui est le meilleur pour nous. Ne craignez donc pas de mettre en lui votre confiance, même quand vous ne voyez pas l’exaucement immédiat de vos prières. Reposez-vous sur cette promesse, qui est ferme : “Demandez, et vous recevrez.”
Si, avant de croire, nous prenons conseil de nos doutes et de nos craintes, ou si nous voulons résoudre tous les points qui pourraient nous paraître obscurs, nos difficultés ne feront qu’augmenter. Mais si nous venons à Dieu dans le sentiment de notre impuissance et de notre dépendance ; si, avec une foi humble et confiante, nous exposons nos besoins à celui dont la sagesse est infinie, à celui qui voit tout, il entendra nos cris et il fera briller sa lumière dans nos cœurs. Par la prière sincère, nous sommes mis en rapport avec la Sagesse infinie. Nous pouvons ne pas avoir, au moment où nous prions, de preuve spéciale que le Seigneur se penche sur nous avec compassion et amour ; mais c’est néanmoins le cas. Nous pouvons ne pas sentir son attouchement, mais sa main est sur nous, et cette main nous assure de son amour et de ses tendres compassions. …
La persévérance dans la prière est une autre condition de l’exaucement. Il faut prier sans cesse pour croître dans la foi. “Persévérez dans la prière”, est-il écrit. “Persévérez dans la prière, veillez-y avec actions de grâces.” (Romains 12 : 12 ; Colossiens 4 : 2.) …La prière constante est une union ininterrompue de l’âme avec le Seigneur, de sorte que la vie de Dieu nous est communiquée, et que de notre vie rejaillissent vers lui la pureté et la sainteté.
La constance dans la prière est une nécessité ; que rien ne s’interpose entre vous et ce devoir. Faites tout ce qui dépend de vous pour maintenir une communion intime entre Jésus et votre âme. Cherchez toutes les occasions de vous rendre là où l’on se réunit pour prier. Ceux qui aspirent véritablement à être en communion avec Dieu seront présents aux réunions de prière et y participeront, vivement désireux d’en retirer tous les avantages possibles. Ils saisiront toutes les occasions pour recevoir du ciel des rayons de lumière. – Vers Jésus, pp. 79-81.
Il faut louer l’Eternel davantage “pour sa bonté, et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l’homme”. (Psaume 107 : 8.) Nos prières ne devraient pas avoir uniquement pour but de demander et de recevoir. Ne pensons pas toujours à nos besoins, et jamais aux bienfaits que nous recevons. Nous ne prions pas trop, mais nous sommes trop chiches de remerciements. Nous sommes les objets de la miséricorde de Dieu, et, pourtant, avec quelle parcimonie lui exprimons-nous notre reconnaissance en retour de tout ce qu’il a fait pour nous ! – Vers Jésus, p. 85.
La prière est un devoir et une nécessité ; mais ne nous arrive-t-il pas de négliger la louange ? Ne devrions-nous pas remercier plus souvent le Donateur de tous nos bienfaits ? Il nous faut cultiver la gratitude. – Messages choisis, vol. 2, p. 307.
