Je vous salue au nom du Seigneur Jésus-Christ et je prie qu’il vous accorde en abondance ses bénédictions, son amour et sa direction.
Une œuvre de renoncement
Beaucoup se méprennent sur l’Évangile et enseignent que ceux qui suivent le Christ n’auront pas les difficultés ou les problèmes rencontrés par ceux qui ne l’acceptent pas comme leur Sauveur personnel. L’enseignement moderne de ‘l’Évangile de la prospérité’, très répandu aux États-Unis d’Amérique, transmet ce concept à ses adeptes : Cet évangile se concentre principalement sur les possessions matérielles, le bien-être physique et le succès dans cette vie, qui comprend principalement une abondance de ressources financières, une bonne santé, des vêtements, des maisons, des voitures, la promotion au travail, la réussite commerciale et d’autres domaines de la vie. C’est une fausse vision de l’enseignement biblique. Il est vrai que lorsque nous acceptons Jésus comme notre Seigneur et Sauveur, la vie prend un autre sens ; en son nom nous sommes bénis et le Saint-Esprit vient demeurer en nous, nous guidant, nous accordant son inspiration, son amour et même son exhortation, mais il ne nous enlève pas la possibilité de goûter à l’amertume de la vie. En fait, Jésus a clairement enseigné que dans le monde nous aurions des afflictions, mais que nous devions faire confiance au Seigneur malgré tout (Jean 16 : 33). L’accent n’est donc pas mis sur la prospérité que nous pourrions avoir, mais sur l’aide que nous recevrons de Dieu dans chaque situation complexe. Pour le chrétien, il est impératif de comprendre que la plus haute priorité dans sa vie est de rechercher la gloire de Dieu, les autres choses, c’est-à-dire les biens assurés dont nous avons besoin pour vivre, seront ajoutées dans la mesure que Dieu juge appropriée et selon le cas de chacun (Matthieu 6 : 33).
Jésus nous présente la réalité de la vie chrétienne : « Alors Jésus dit à ses disciples : Si quelqu’un veut venir après moi, qu’il renonce à lui-même, qu’il se charge de sa croix, et qu’il me suive. » Matthieu 16 : 24.
Que signifie « se charger de sa croix » ? Le contexte du verset l’explique : Ceux qui souhaitent suivre Jésus doivent « se renier ». C’est un renoncement à soi, à l’égoïsme, à vouloir être le centre de tout en oubliant les autres. Si nous étudions la vie de notre Créateur, nous verrons qu’elle est caractérisée par le verbe ‘donner’. Dieu aurait pu créer uniquement pour lui-même et jouir en tant que Père, Fils et Saint-Esprit. Il avait tous les droits et n’avait besoin de donner aucune explication à personne. Mais Dieu a décidé de créer des anges, des êtres dans d’autres mondes et nous.
Il nous a donné la vie en Éden, il nous a offert son image et sa ressemblance, une demeure, un monde parfait, plein d’animaux dociles pour embellir la vie de l’homme et la rendre heureuse. Toute la création est l’œuvre de Dieu et le Créateur la soutient par la puissance de sa Parole, par son amour. Le psalmiste reconnaît cela quand il dit : « Les yeux de tous espèrent en toi, et tu leur donnes la nourriture en son temps. Tu ouvres ta main, et tu rassasies à souhait tout ce qui a vie. » Psaume 145 : 15, 16.
Une œuvre d’abnégation
Enfin, le Père a donné son Fils Jésus, qui est devenu homme et a mené une vie d’abnégation totale, nous donnant un exemple en tout et finalement a pris humblement la croix pour y mourir. N’est-ce pas une démonstration claire et sans équivoque de l’amour de Dieu pour chacun de nous ? Que pouvons-nous demander de plus à Dieu pour prouver que sa main puissante tient la nôtre et qu’il ne nous laisse pas errer seuls dans cette vallée de douleur ?
Il est vrai que nous sommes entourés de souffrance et que parfois nous devons en faire l’expérience dans notre propre chair, comme le patriarche Job.
Mais il est aussi vrai que la croix que nous devons porter ne dépasse pas notre force car Dieu nous soutient : « Aucune tentation ne vous est survenue qui n’ait été humaine, et Dieu, qui est fidèle, ne permettra pas que vous soyez tentés au delà de vos forces ; mais avec la tentation il préparera aussi le moyen d’en sortir, afin que vous puissiez la supporter. » 1 Corinthiens 10 : 13.
L’abnégation, l’humilité du cœur, la soumission à la volonté de Dieu, sont des attitudes de l’âme qui peuvent être cultivées avec l’aide de Dieu. Le Père et le Fils nous ont envoyé le Saint-Esprit pour demeurer en nous et accomplir une œuvre de transformation complète. Et ainsi, avec des yeux et des cœurs purs, qui sont les canaux que l’Esprit purifie, nous pourrons vivre dans cette nouvelle dimension dans laquelle le ‘moi’ ne règne plus mais le Christ vit et règne en nous (Galates 2 : 20).
Conclusion
C’est pourquoi l’apôtre Paul a pu affirmer : « Je meurs chaque jour. » 1 Corinthiens 15 : 31, v. Darby. Mourir est l’acte de cessation de la vie. Quand nous mourons, toutes les fonctions organiques et cérébrales cessent. Il n’y a plus le moindre signe d’activité ni d’énergie. Le corps se décompose jusqu’à ce qu’il se désagrège et c’est ainsi que nous cessons d’être. Dans un sens spirituel, ‘cesser d’être’ c’est mourir au ‘moi’, car c’est notre ‘moi’ qui est la cause de notre ruine et de notre séparation d’avec Dieu.
Tant que le ‘moi’ vit, nous ne permettons pas au Saint-Esprit de prendre possession de notre esprit, nos désirs, nos aspirations, nos actes. « La parfaite sanctification… n’est autre chose qu’une mort quotidienne à soi-même et une obéissance quotidienne à la volonté de Dieu. » – Avec Dieu chaque jour, p. 262.
Cher jeune homme, chère jeune fille, je sens que c’est mon devoir sacré et ma responsabilité de vous inviter à porter avec humilité de cœur la croix que Christ a mis sur vos épaules. Je sais que vous ne devez pas le faire seul (e). Vous avez besoin de l’aide du Saint-Esprit. La bonne nouvelle est que Christ nous accorde son Esprit pour que tous ceux qui croient en lui ne périssent point, n’aient pas besoin de lutter en vain, de souffrir en vain, de pleurer en vain, de sombrer sans remède.
Tous les êtres humains souffrent et font face à des situations difficiles et même angoissantes, mais celui qui est à nos côtés est plus puissant que n’importe quel problème, plus haut que toute montagne infranchissable, plus profond que les océans, plus grand que l’univers. Oui, Jésus est tout et est au-dessus de tout, il peut tout faire et il gouverne tout, il n’y a rien qui puisse lui résister.
Servirons-nous notre bien-aimé Sauveur ? L’aimerons-nous ? Que Dieu vous bénisse. Amen.
