Par sa vie et ses enseignements, le Christ a donné un exemple parfait du ministère désintéressé qui a sa source en Dieu. Dieu ne vit pas pour lui-même. En créant le monde, en soutenant toutes choses, il exerce un ministère constant en faveur de ses créatures. “Il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons et fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes.” Matthieu 5 : 45. Dieu a mis devant son Fils cet idéal du service. Jésus a été placé à la tête de l’humanité pour être son modèle et lui apprendre ce que c’est que de servir.
Sa vie entière fut gouvernée par la loi du service. Il fut au service de tout le monde. C’est ainsi qu’il mit en pratique la loi de Dieu et montra, par son exemple, comment nous devons lui obéir. A maintes reprises, Jésus s’était efforcé d’établir ce principe parmi les disciples. Quand Jacques et Jean avaient sollicité la prééminence, il leur avait dit : “Quiconque veut être grand parmi vous, qu’il soit votre serviteur.” Matthieu 20 : 26. Dans son royaume, il n’y a point de place pour le privilège et la suprématie. On n’y reconnaît qu’une grandeur : celle de l’humilité. La seule distinction consiste à se dévouer au service d’autrui. – Jésus-Christ, pp. 645, 652.
Les disciples du Christ ont été rachetés en vue du service. Notre Seigneur enseigne que le véritable but de la vie, c’est l’utilité commune. Jésus lui-même fut un ouvrier, et il a fait du service une loi pour tous. Chacun doit se dépenser pour Dieu et pour ses semblables. Le Sauveur a présenté au monde une conception de la vie dépassant toutes celles que l’on connaissait. Une existence consacrée au prochain met l’homme en relation avec le Christ. La loi du service est l’anneau qui nous relie à Dieu et à nos semblables.
Le Maître nous confie ses biens, c’est-à-dire quelque chose dont nous devons faire usage pour lui. Il indique à chacun sa tâche, car tous ont un rôle dans le plan éternel de Dieu, tous sont appelés à collaborer avec le Christ au salut des âmes. Notre champ d’activité ici-bas est prévu de façon aussi certaine que la place préparée pour nous dans les parvis célestes. – Les paraboles de Jésus, p. 282.
Notre viedoit être cachée avec leChrist en Dieu. Nous devons avoir une connaissance personnelle du Sauveur. Alors seulement nous pourrons être ses vrais représentants sur laterre. Que cette prière soit constamment lanôtre : “Seigneur, enseigne-moi à agir comme l’aurait fait Jésus à ma place.” Où que nous soyons, nous devons faire briller notre lumière par nos bonnes œuvres, pour lagloire deDieu. Il faut que les jeunes comprennent qu’éduquer n’est pas apprendre à échapper aux tâches désagréables, aux fardeaux pesants de la vie ; mais que lepropos detoute éducation est d’alléger letravail en apportant des méthodes meilleures et des aspirations plus élevées. Levéritable but de la vien’est pas des’assurer les plus grands profits, mais d’honorer leCréateur en accomplissant sa part dans l’œuvre du monde, et en accordant son aide aux faibles et aux ignorants. – Education, p. 250.
La vie terrestre du Sauveur n’a pas été une vie d’aises et d’égoïsme. Il a travaillé avec une persévérance et une ardeur infatigables au salut de l’humanité déchue. De la crèche au Calvaire, il a suivi le sentier du renoncement, sans chercher jamais à éviter les travaux ardus, les voyages pénibles, les soucis qui accablent et les corvées qui épuisent. Il disait : “Le Fils de l’homme est venu, non pour être servi, mais pour servir et donner sa vie en rançon pour beaucoup.” Matthieu 20 : 28. C’était là le grand but de sa vie. Tout le reste était pour lui secondaire. Sa nourriture était de faire la volonté de Dieu et d’accomplir son œuvre. Le “moi” et ses intérêts particuliers ne trouvaient aucune place dans ses labeurs.
Ceux qui participent à la grâce et au don céleste seront prêts eux aussi à tous les sacrifices en faveur des âmes pour lesquelles le Christ est mort. Ils feront tout ce qui est en leur pouvoir pour laisser le monde meilleur qu’ils l’ont trouvé. Cet esprit est la conséquence inévitable d’une conversion réelle. Dès qu’on a appris à connaître Jésus on éprouve le besoin impérieux de parler à d’autres de l’Ami précieux qu’on a trouvé. La vérité qui sauve et sanctifie ne peut rester enfermée dans le cœur. Si nous sommes revêtus de la justice de Jésus-Christ et remplis de la joie de son Esprit, il nous est impossible de garder le silence. Si nous avons goûté que le Seigneur est bon, nous aurons quelque chose à raconter. Comme Philippe, dès que nous aurons trouvé le Christ, nous en inviterons d’autres à venir à lui. Nous nous efforcerons de leur présenter les attraits du Sauveur et les réalités invisibles du monde à venir. Le désir de suivre le sentier que Jésus a foulé sera intense, et ardent le besoin d’amener ceux qui nous entourent à contempler “l’Agneau de Dieu qui ôte le péché du monde”. Jean 1 : 29.
Tout effort en faveur de nos semblables retombera sur nous en rosée de bénédictions. C’est la raison pour laquelle Dieu nous a confié un rôle dans le plan du salut. Il a accordé à l’homme le privilège de participer de la nature divine et de communiquer à son tour cette prérogative à ses semblables. C’est là le plus grand honneur, la joie la plus parfaite qu’il soit possible à Dieu de nous accorder. Ceux qui contribuent à cette mission d’amour se rapprochent le plus de leur Créateur. – Vers Jésus, p. 120.
L’amour, qui est à l’origine de l’acte créateur et rédempteur, doit être aussi à l’origine de la véritable éducation. La loi que Dieu nous a donnée pour diriger notre vie le manifeste de façon éclatante. Le premier et le plus grand commandement est : “Tu aimeras le Seigneur, ton Dieu, de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme, de toute ta force, et de toute ta pensée.” Luc 10 : 27. L’aimer, Lui, l’infini, l’omniscient, de toute sa force, de toute sa pensée, de tout son cœur, implique que nous développions à l’extrême chacune de nos facultés. Cela implique qu’en notre être tout entier – le corps et la pensée, aussi bien que l’âme – l’image de Dieu doit être restaurée.
Le second commandement est semblable au premier : “Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.” Matthieu 22 : 39. La loi d’amour nous demande de mettre au service de Dieu et de nos semblables notre corps, notre pensée et notre âme. Et ce service auquel nous nous consacrons, qui fait de nous une bénédiction pour les autres, nous apporte à nous-mêmes la plus grande des bénédictions. Le don de soi sous-tend toute véritable formation de l’être. C’est à travers le service désintéressé qu’il nous est donné de développer au mieux chacune de nos aptitudes. C’est ainsi que nous participerons de plus en plus pleinement à la nature divine. Nous sommes prêts pour le royaume des cieux, car nous le recevons dans notre cœur. – Education, p. 18.
Ceux qui, dans la mesure du possible, s’efforcent de faire du bien en montrant, d’une manière pratique, l’intérêt qu’ils ont pour leurs semblables, ne soulagent pas seulement les maux de la vie humaine en allégeant des fardeaux, mais ils contribuent en même temps à affermir puissamment leur santé physique et morale. Celui qui fait du bien en bénéficie autant que celui qui le reçoit. En vous oubliant en faveur d’autrui, vous remportez une victoire sur vos propres infirmités. La satisfaction que vous éprouverez en faisant du bien contribuera puissamment à rétablir l’équilibre de votre imagination.
Le plaisir qu’on éprouve à faire du bien vivifie l’esprit et réagit sur tout le corps. – Messages à la Jeunesse, p. 207.
Il nous faut vivre dans ce monde de manière à gagner des âmes pour le Sauveur. Si nous faisons tort à d’autres, nous nous faisons tort à nous aussi. Si nous sommes en bénédiction aux autres, la bénédiction retombera également sur nous, car tout acte bon a sa répercussion en nous.
Chaque rayon de lumière répandu sur les autres se reflète en nous. Chaque parole aimable et empreinte de sympathie adressée à ceux qui souffrent, chaque action faite en faveur de ceux qui sont accablés, et chaque don offert à nos semblables qui sont dans le besoin, avec le désir de rendre gloire à Dieu, entraîne une bénédiction sur son auteur. Ceux qui agissent ainsi se conforment à une loi divine et reçoivent l’approbation de Dieu.
Alors que la grande récompense finale est accordée au moment de l’avènement du Christ, tout service sincère accompli pour Dieu apporte une récompense déjà dans cette vie. L’ouvrier devra faire face à des obstacles, à l’opposition, à l’amertume, aux crève-cœur. Il ne verra peut-être pas les fruits de son travail. En dépit de tout cela, il trouve une récompense bénie dans le fait de pouvoir travailler. Tous ceux qui s’abandonnent à Dieu dans un service désintéressé en faveur de l’humanité communient avec le Seigneur de gloire. Cette pensée adoucit l’effort, fortifie la volonté, ranime l’esprit dans n’importe quelle circonstance. – Instructions pour un service chrétien effectif, pp. 327, 328.
